Extending Our Reach.

Advancing Women’s Prosperity in the Workplace through Technical and Soft Skills in Environmental Science and Geospatial Technologies

A program undertaken in collaboration with and on behalf of the global partnership of SERVIR with funding from NASA and USAID.

Partnering with NASA SERVIR and USAID, we are empowering early career women in the geospatial sector through professional development in technical skills such as machine learning, and drones, and soft or “power” skills like leadership and networking to improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging among women scientists.

Meaningful and equitable engagement: from parachute science to collaborative science.

International research engages scientists from around the world but also has the potential to alienate, discourage, and hinder progress through ‘parachute science’ in which scientists, often from wealthier nations, visit a location, collect data, and publish results with minimal engagement with the local scientists and/or decision-makers. Avoiding parachute science has implications not only for international science and collaborations, but also for issues of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the US and more broadly.
