Interested in Joining the SCALE Lab?

Open lab positions will be posted here when available.

Graduate Students: We are always eager to have bright, qualified, and curious students join our SCALE lab team!

If you are interested in applying to the graduate program in Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, please review the information below:

  • The SCALE lab typically admits PhD students who have (or will have) earned a Masters degree before entering the program. In some cases, extremely qualified students with a Bachelor’s degree are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have experience with independent research evidenced by academic publications and/or conference presentations.

  • Please send your academic CV and a statement of your future PhD research interests including why you believe the SCALE lab is a good fit for your academic journey and what types of projects you are interested in working on. The UCSB Geography application deadline is in early December, so please reach out before November if you are interested in applying.

  • If you sent an email and did not receive a response, it is appropriate to re-send that email in case it was missed (I receive more emails than I can respond to each day!). However, please do not resend your email more than once.

  • We receive many applications from exceptional students each year and cannot accept them all as there are a limited number of RA and TA positions available. If you are interested in applying for your own funding or plan to self-fund, please reach out so that we can have a conversation about these options. Some U.S. programs that provide PhD funding include the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the NASA FINNEST Program.

  • Please visit the UCSB Geography Graduate Program website for more information on the program requirements, including resources for how to apply.

Undergraduate Students: If you are interested in joining the lab as an undergraduate student, please review the information below:

  • You should have some experience or coursework with GIS or Remote Sensing.

  • You can earn research credit with the lab through GEOG 198 (Readings in Geography), GEOG 199 (Independent Study), or GEOG 199RA (Research Assistantship).

  • Contact Prof. Frazier with your research interests and ideas for a project. Visit our Research Projects page for more information.
